Traditional French Galette des Rois with golden puff pastry and almond frangipane, made at La Petite Maison in Whitehorse

Galette des Rois
A French New Year Tradition

What Is Galette des Rois?

Galette des Rois (also known as King Cake) is a cherished French New Year tradition, enjoyed every January to celebrate new beginnings and the joy of being together.

This golden, flaky cake filled with rich almond frangipane is meant to be shared, sliced at the table, surrounded by laughter, anticipation, and tradition.

More than a dessert, it marks the start of the year with warmth, generosity, and a little magic.

A Tradition of Sharing, Luck & Celebration

At the heart of the Galette des Rois tradition is a simple ritual: hidden inside the cake is a small porcelain charm, called la fève. Whoever finds it in their slice is crowned king or queen for the day, wearing the paper crown that comes with the galette.

This playful moment symbolizes luck, happiness, and prosperity for the year ahead:
a reminder that the New Year is best welcomed together, sharing food, stories, and joy with the people we love.

Our Galette des Rois at La Petite Maison

Our Galette des Rois is made entirely in-house, following the traditional French method.

From the laminated puff pastry to the almond frangipane filling, every step is done from scratch with care and precision.

For this edition, we have specially ordered our fèves from France, so each galette is not only a delicious dessert, but also a keepsake from the Old World, a small piece of tradition to take home and treasure.
